Why would someone need a neuropsychological evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluations are typically used to assess cognitive abilities after brain injuries, neurological conditions (e.g., Alzheimer's, stroke), neurodevelopmental and intellectual disorders, learning disabilities, mental health disorders, or to evaluate competency for legal cases such as personal injury claims or criminal responsibility. 

What types of tests are involved in a neuropsychological evaluation?

The evaluation includes a series of standardized tests that measure areas such as memory, attention, language, problem-solving, motor skills, and emotional/behavioral functioning. These tests help to identify strengths and weaknesses in an individuals functioning to help us better assist the individual in daily life. 

How long does a neuropsychological evaluation take?

The evaluation process can take several hours, typically ranging from 3 to 6 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the specific tests being administered. Some evaluations may spread across multiple sessions. 

What happens after the evaluation?

Once the evaluation is complete, the neuropsychologist will analyze the results and prepare a comprehensive report which may include recommendations for treatment, accommodations, or further evaluations. The findings can be shared with your healthcare provider, attorney, or other relevant parties. 

How do I prepare for a neuropsychological evaluation?

Preparation typically involves being well-rested and mentally prepared for the testing. It is helpful to bring any relevant medical or psychological records. The neuropsychologist will also ask about your medical history, symptoms, and concerns prior to starting the testing. 

Can a neuropsychological evaluation diagnose conditions?

Yes, a neuropsychological evaluation can help diagnose conditions such as brain injuries,  dementia, attention disorders, learning disabilities, and cognitive impairments. 

Will I need treatment after a neuropsychological evaluation?

Depending on the findings, the neuropsychologist may recommend therapy, rehabilitation, or further medical evaluation. The evaluation itself is part of understanding how your brain works, including cognitive and functional abilities, which can guide treatment options.
